CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

The call with the former Constable Campbell Williams came to an end soon after his revelations about Ronald Donlon’s interference. He didn’t have much to say about the CID investigation, other than that Ronald was only too eager to volunteer his services to the detective leading the case, too.

Lunch was still an hour or so away, so when Hamza returned with a joyous, somewhat mud-stained Taggart, the team gathered around for some pre-lunch tea and biscuits, and went over all the morning’s findings together.

Someone from Geoff Palmer’s team—Logan prayed to God it wouldn’t be Geoff himself—was summoned to come check Orla’s diary and jewellery for prints, while Logan dished out instructions for the rest of the afternoon.

“Tyler, Hamza, I want you two keeping an eye on Ronald Donlon.”

Ben shifted around in his chair. “I don’t know if that’s really necessary, Jack,” he said. “Ronnie’s a decent guy. I know what the PC said, but… I just don’t think he’d be involved. Not in murder.”

“I hope you’re right,” Logan said. He turned back to Hamza and Tyler. “Park up near his house, keep watch, and see if he comes or goes,” he told them. “And try not to let him see you.”

“How come we’re just watching him, boss?” Tyler asked. “You not going to pull him in for questioning?”

“Not yet, no. I want to get more on the bastard first. He’ll know his stuff, so no point us going in half-baked on it. When we pull him in, I want us to have something more concrete.”

“Makes sense, sir,” Hamza said, knocking back what was left of his tea in one big gulp. “Should we shoot off now?”

“No time like the present, Sergeant,” Logan told him. “And for God’s sake, be careful,” he reminded them both. “I don’t want him getting wind of you watching him.”

“Don’t you worry, boss. We’ll be like a couple of ninjas,” Tyler promised, then a better idea occurred to him. “No. Wait. We’ll be like ghosts!”

His eyes widened in excitement. His mouth began to open.

“If you’re about to say that you’ll be ghost ninjas, Detective Constable, I urge you to reconsider,” Logan warned.

Tyler deflated. “Eh, no, boss. Wasn’t going to say that, actually.”

Sinead smirked. “Ninja ghosts?”

“Maybe,” Tyler conceded. “Maybe it was that.”

“Right, go. He’s not going to stakeout himself,” Logan told them.

Both detectives got up and grabbed their jackets. Just before they left, Logan asked one final question of the whole team.

“Anyone seen or heard from Hoon, by the way?”

Nobody had. Logan wasn’t sure whether to be relieved about that, or concerned.

“He’s probably gone back home by now,” Ben suggested.

Logan’s, “Hmm,” hummed with scepticism. “We’ll see,” he said, then he waved a hand, dismissing Tyler and Hamza.

He waited for them both to leave the Incident Room, then turned his attention to DC Bell.

“Sinead. How you feeling now?”

“Fine, sir,” Sinead assured him. She looked a better colour, too. A human colour.

“Good. In that case, once Scene of Crime’s checked it for prints, I want you going through the diary.
